CFP: Satellite Exploratory Events 2017-18 – deadline 5pm on 23 March 2018

Dear School of Arts Postgraduate Research Students,

Satellite – the School of Arts group/subcommittee focused on technology-enhanced learning, broadly defined – is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals for exploratory events to take place this Summer Term 2017-18.

While these exploratory events can also be proposed by School academics, teaching and scholarship staff and administrative staff, we are specifically reaching out to you, as budding academics and teachers, with an appeal to apply. These events are a great opportunity to explore your interests as they relate to the intersection of technologies for pedagogy. You may, for instance, want to organise an event around alternative approaches to assessment that make use of techniques such as mobile video, social media or blogging. Or an event which considers innovative ways in-class learning experiences can be blended with online activities in-between sessions. Or the ways in which the digitalisation of our research objects or methods might shift how we teach and assess our subject areas. These examples are not exhaustive, and there are many other possibilities.

Proposals are due by 5pm on 23 March 2018 and must include the following:

  • Event Title
  • Event Convenor(s) (name and short bio / link to web profile)
  • Event Description (no more than 300 words)
  • Requested funding amount and its purpose(s) (e.g. catering costs – please specify if Satellite funding will be complemented by other funds, e.g. from department or research centre)

Vacancy with funding: Venice Biennale 18-19 – Steward Fellowship deadline 12 Jan 2018

Dear School of Arts Student,

The School of Arts at Birkbeck is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity to all current students. We are inviting applications for two Steward-Research Fellowships at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018, running between 26 May and 25 November 2018. A background in architecture or architectural history is not a pre-requisite. These are part funded by the British Council, and by the School of Arts. The successful candidates will be responsible for making their own travel, accommodation and insurance arrangements, but will be given a grant of £1600 for the month towards these and other expenses.

The successful candidates will work four days per week as an invigilator in the British Pavilion. Their remaining time will be used for study and research around the biennale theme, Freespace, which describes a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity at the core of architecture’s agenda, focusing on the quality of space itself. Students may wish to use this opportunity to contribute to an existing project or a dissertation – but there is no obligation to do so.

Applications are due by 5pm on 12 January 2018.

VACANCY: London Renaissance Seminar: Research Internship: deadline Monday 4 December 12.00pm.

London Renaissance Seminar: Research Internship

The London Renaissance Seminar invites postgraduate students at Birkbeck to apply for a research internship 2017-18. This internship is open to all postgraduate students at Birkbeck.

The London Renaissance Seminar hosts and organises a variety of events from half-day symposia to lectures, larger conferences and single lectures. Most events are open to audiences. Anyone with an interest in the Renaissance is welcome to attend. Seminars are usually held in the School of Arts, 43 Gordon Square.

The internship is open to all postgraduate students at Birkbeck and is likely to be particularly rewarding for those working in a historical or literary field in the early modern period. The postholder will (a) have a budget of about £150 to fund a research-led event of their choice for the LRS, and (b) to participate in steering and above all maintaining the Seminar during the academic year 2017-18. Thus interns will liaise with event organisers at Birkbeck and beyond, work with members of the Steering Committee and work towards a small filming project which the seminar is undertaking.

The internship is planned to commence in December 2017 and end in July 2018 (there may be some flexibility). The successful candidates will be working on a postgraduate degree, have some prior research experience and be familiar with early modern texts and ideas.

The research intern’s responsibilities include:

  • Devising, planning, scheduling, advertising and delivering an LRS event using the assigned budget: Event to be held in 2017-18.
  • Supporting the Steering Committee and (e.g. planning, events, social media).
  • Supporting LRS filming for a small film by liaising with academics and helping to locate objects at Wellcome Trust.

The intern is to be paid at Grade 5 £15.69 per hour up to a total of 74 hours.

As indicated, students at MPhil and PhD level may apply. In applying, please supply:

  1. 150 words outlining (a) your special area of research and how it relates to the period 1500-1690 (b) how the placement will benefit your academic study; (c) how the internship will develop your career skills.
  2. 150 words giving an initial proposal for an outward-facing LRS event. The format of this event is open (Examples include but are not limited to: postgraduate conference; site-specific seminar; book talk; symposium; performance and analysis).

These can be submitted as separate documents or in the form of a letter. Applicants should also provide:

  1. A full CV
  2. The name of 1 academic referee

Closing date: Monday 4 December 12.00pm.

Interviews:  between 8 and 14 December.

If you are not available during that period please indicate that on your application.

You should submit your application as a MS Word document with the information and documents requested above and marked ‘LRS Intern’ to Professor Susan Wiseman s.wiseman@bbk.ac.uk by 12.00pm on Monday 4 December. Enquiries to the same e-mail please.

School of Arts artist-in-residence workshop: Lily Hunter Green – 24 November 2017 7pm

The first workshop with the artist-in-residence Lily Hunter Green will take place on Friday 24 Nov, at 7pm in G10 (finishing at 8.30pm).

Lily is going to make the first workshop more of a conversation and ideas platform. She will showcase some of her work and also explain how other artists and scientists have become involved.

For this workshop Lily asks you to think of your discipline and/or strengths (e.g. music, dance, linguistics, feminist theory, experience in economics, sociology, teaching, psychology, etc.), and consider these in relation to possibilities for ‘hive’ activity. In this workshop Lily will introduce a series of interesting facts about bees and the ‘hive mind’, and as a group you will begin to imagine how it might fit within Bee Composed Live. For example, you may come up with the beginnings of a libretto, a piece of choreography, digital imagery, theatre, etc.  that reflect a hive activity.

The first workshop will just be lots of pens and paper and lots of throwing ideas down together. Thinking as a ‘Collective Wisdom’.

Capital Reading Group Vol 2 – 31 October 2017 and beyond

“Do you want to read Marx’s Capital?

Having completed Volume I, Birkbeck’s Capital Reading Group is beginning Volume II and you’re invited to join us. The group meets fortnightly on Tuesdays and is a friendly setting in which to study the text closely, ask any questions you may have and gain a deeper understanding of Marx’s work and concepts.

The next session takes place at 7pm on 31 October in Room 106, 43 Gordon Square. No reading is necessary for this session, which will consist of an introductory presentation about Volume II and a discussion of the reading strategy for the coming weeks.

The edition we’re using is the Penguin Classics version, but the use of other editions and translations is more than welcome.

Academic Writing Sessions – Autumn Term 2017

Dear all,

You are invited to a new series of academic writing sessions, to be held twice weekly in the School of Arts. Inspired by/in unabashed mimicry of Alice Kelly’s academic writing group at Oxford, the sessions are designed to give researchers at all stages some time, space and peer support for focused work on extended writing projects.

 

 

 

 

 

The three-hour sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm, starting on Monday 9th October. They will be structured as follows:

10.00-10.15: arrival, catching up and goal-sharing

10.15-11.30: first writing session

11.30-11.45: break

11.45-13.00: second writing session

There is a cap of 12 people per session due to the room size, so participants should sign up in advance. You don’t have to attend each session: if you think you would like to come at any point, email Sophie at sophie.jones@bbk.ac.uk to be added to the general mailing list. On Friday Sophie will send the email list a sign-up sheet for the next week’s sessions (first come, first served) and details of the room. If you would like to come to the first session next Monday 9th, please indicate that in your initial email.

Sophie is starting these sessions as a new postdoctoral researcher in the Department of English and Humanities and envisage that they will be particularly helpful for postdoctoral and PhD researchers, but they are very much open to all staff engaged in writing projects.

Note: The group isn’t designed as a space for sharing work, though it might well create opportunities for doing so.
