The Emerging Beardsley Scholar Prize – deadline 31 December 2020

To mark the foundation of the Aubrey Beardsley Society, a prize for the best short essay on any aspect of Beardsley’s work, life, and reception will be awarded to an outstanding emerging scholar. The Society aims to encourage new work that is intellectually adventurous and stylistically accomplished, and seeks submissions that highlight Beardsley’s relevance today.

Eligibility

  • Postgraduate (MA, MPhil, PhD) and early career researchers who have not held a permanent academic post are invited to participate.
  • The participants should join the Aubrey Beardsley Society (discounted membership).
  • Essays should be up to 2,500 words and formatted in accordance with the MHRA style.

The amount of the Emerging Beardsley Scholar Prize is £500. Two runners-up will be awarded £100 each, and the three winning pieces will be published in the AB Blog. The Prize is supported by the Alessandra Wilson Fund.

The Gaskell Journal runs a biennial Graduate Student Essay Prize in honour of Joan Leach MBE, founder of the Gaskell Society.

Terms

The essay competition is open to all graduate students currently registered for an MA or PhD in Victorian Studies. Entries are invited that offer an original contribution to the field of Gaskell studies, whether by reading her works in relation to Victorian cultural, religious, aesthetic and scientific contexts, or through innovative close readings enlightened by critical theory, or a comparative study connecting Gaskell’s with another author’s work.  Essays will be shortlisted by the Gaskell Journal Editorial Board, with the final judgment being made by a leading scholar in Gaskell studies.

Prize

The winning essay will be published in the Gaskell Journal (subject to appropriate revisions), and its author will receive £200 from the Gaskell Society, and a complimentary copy of the Journal. High quality runners-up will also be considered for publication.

Conditions

Gender and Medieval Studies Student Essay Prize 2016

The Gender and Medieval Studies Group offers a postgraduate student essay prize, which is awarded at the GMS conference in January each year. The competition is open to students at all levels including those who will be completing their degree in the coming year.

Essays should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words in length (including notes) and should engage with questions of gender and/or sexuality in the Middle Ages. Essays should follow a recognised academic referencing system (such as MHRA), should include a bibliography and all images should be captioned.

Submissions from postgraduates working within any discipline in the field are encouraged.

The prize gives free registration to the GMS conference (held every January at a different UK institution) for two years (2017 and 2018) and a contribution towards UK travel costs to the conference. In 2017 the conference will be on Gender, Places, Spaces, Thresholds and will be held at Canterbury, Christchurch University (12th-15th January).

The winning essay will also be considered for publication in the academic journal Medieval Feminist Forum, run by the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship (SMFS).

There may be years when no prize is awarded, depending upon submissions in any given year.

Call for submissions: Contemporary Art Writing Prize 2016

The Burlington Contemporary Art Writing Prize seeks to discover talent young writers on contemporary art, with the winner receiving £1,000 and the opportunity to publish a review of a contemporary art exhibition in The Burlington Magazine.

The winner of the Prize will be announced in May 2016. Every applicant will be offered an online subscription to the Magazine at a specially reduced price.

The guest judges are the incoming Director of the Tate Britain, Alex Farquharson, and the eminent scholar and Curator of Special Projects in Modern Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Lynne Cooke.

Submission requirements:

Contenders – who must be no older than 30 years of age and have published no more than 6 exhibition reviews – should submit one unpublished review of a contemporary art exhibition, no more than 1000 words in length with up to three low-resolution images. ‘Contemporary’ is defined as art produced since 2000. The submitted review must be written in English (although the art considered may be international) and emailed as a Word document, clearly stating the name, age, country of residence and occupation of the writer to editorial@burlington.org,uk
