Summary

Building on ideas explored in the Re- Interdisciplinary Network’s CRASSH events, the conference aims to examine ideas of repetition within canonical traditions of tragedy from the perspective of the Global South, in the process raising questions about the problems of those categories as they are changing. We want to scrutinize the literary, political, and philosophical relevance of re-/un-working tragedy in cross-cultural contexts. Taking up the concept of ‘tragedy’ in a world shaken by global conflicts, deterritorialization, and migration crises, the conference asks:

  • How do people in various zones of crisis embrace, interpret and adapt canonical traditions of tragedy to make sense of their suffering and express their resistance?
  • How do authors, playwrights, performers, philosophers, and critics respond to the questions raised by the reworking of tragedies?
  • How does the reworking of tragedies in the Global South transform the idea of the canon and/or decolonise the literary curricula?

We often employ the prefix ‘re-’, as in ‘re-working’, ‘re-writing’, ‘re-thinking’, ‘re-imagining’, ‘re-appropriating’, ‘re-presenting’ as if to situate the modern work in a historical line, or dialectical movement, of repetitions. The creation of the new cannot but come with reference to the prior. But how does recognisable repetition operate as a unique kind of site for invention, and for speech? Besides, how might we rethink the tragic canon as a destabilizing gesture – an un-working, rather than re-working – through perspectives from the Global South? In reference to ‘unworking’, or désoevrement as a concept that interrupts, suspends, and counteracts the work in the moment of its unfolding, the conference will look for ways to put the authoritative position of the ‘original work’ at stake. Unworking this notion of ‘the original’ reveals the work of tragedy as that which opens itself to reinvention and becomes self-consciously meaningful in the moment of its re-presentation.

The conference will bring together artists and authors who adapt classical tragedies together with academics from various disciplines. The programme will comprise roundtable discussions, panels and creative workshops.

The electronic, open-access journal, 19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century is seeking a postgraduate editorial intern in Academic Publishing Online. You will gain editorial, organizational and technical experience under the supervision of the General Editor, Dr Carolyn Burdett, and with the guidance of the Editorial Board and the journal’s publisher, the Open Library of Humanities (OLH).

Having established itself as an innovative electronic journal in 2005, amongst the earliest titles in the area of nineteenth-century studies and fully peer-reviewed and free to view, 19 is now part of the open-access world it has helped to create: it has professional typesetting and production, digital preservation, permanent identifiers, and a sustainable publisher in the OLH.

Interns have always been, and remain, integral to the journal’s developing strategies to retain quality and distinction in a rapidly changing academic publishing field. The post provides a vital service for the journal; it also provides highly enjoyable and challenging doctoral training provision, equipping humanities graduates with vital transferable skills and experience within the important industry context of academic publishing.

The internship will build skill and expertise in submitting and achieving publication of research material; editing special issues; developing publication projects in association with conferences and seminars; networking; presentation skills; and communication skills. It will equip you with real-world publishing training experience in an open-access environment.

Interns gain detailed knowledge of the entire process of article submission and peer review. They are trained by an incumbent intern and, in turn, train the next post-holder thus consolidating knowledge and communicating it effectively and in ‘real work’ environments.

The post is for 12 months part time (equivalent to a part time placement of 3 months (FTE)). Most of the work involved can take place wherever there is access to a computer. Each term there will be a team meeting held at Birkbeck, University of London (travel funding will be available).

Hours are necessarily flexible because of the nature of journal publication and work patterns will be agreed with the General Editor. However, the ‘norm’ is 3.5 hours per week, worked over a 48 week year.

£3675 per annum

£4175 per annum (with London Weighting)

Essential

  • Excellent literacy skills
  • Organizational and clerical skills
  • Independence and initiative
  • Research interests in Nineteenth-Century Studies

Desirable but NOT essential

  • Web authoring and design skills
  • Experience in electronic publishing
  • Editing experience
  • Organization of research activities such as Reading Groups, Seminars or Conferences

We are delighted to announce that 19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century at http://www.19.bbk.ac.uk has had a makeover. We hope you’ll agree that the journal is looking very good as it prepares to celebrate its first ten years this autumn.

19 publishes two themed issues per year under the auspices of invited guest editors. It is part of Birkbeck’s Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies and is under the general editorship of Dr Carolyn Burdett.

The journal is now proudly housed within the Open Library of Humanities (OLH), a platform for open access publishing also based at Birkbeck. The OLH has a unique model to fund open access journals in the humanities that doesn’t rely on author charges but instead receives support from a large number of libraries.
