Globe Education Research Internships

Birkbeck University of London and Globe Education at Shakespeare’s Globe are happy to invite postgraduate students working in a historical or literary field in the early modern period at Birkbeck to apply for a research internship at Globe Education in autumn/winter 2016-17 (running November-January inclusive).

Students taking early MAs (MA Medieval, MA Renaissance) and MPhil and Phd students working in the early periods are invited to apply for up to two research internship placements to participate in dramaturgical research for the upcoming Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and Globe Theatre seasons. The placements commence the week of Monday 7 November 2015 and end the week of Monday 23 January 2017. The successful candidates will be working on a postgraduate degree and have some prior research experience and be familiar with early modern texts.

Research interns aid all departments at Shakespeare’s Globe by providing research documents and short answers to any queries that arise. The research intern’s responsibilities include:

  • Dramaturgy and background research on aspects of early modern culture
  • Conducting and transcribing the end of season interviews
  • Answering general queries, Facebook and Twitter discussion questions
  • Supporting the Librarian and Archivist
  • Assisting at Globe Education events

The placements are of a period of up to THREE months and not less than TWO months. You will need to commit to 8 hours a week to be spent on site at the Globe, during the day Monday to Friday, with hours to be decided in consultation with Globe Education. You will be based in the Globe Library and Archive and report to Dr Will Tosh, research fellow and lecturer.

As indicated, students at MA, MPhil and PhD level may apply. In applying, please supply:

The placements are unpaid and we cannot pay travel expenses. Successful applicants will receive a Globe staff pass that entitles them to free access to Globe Education events. Holders of Globe staff passes also receive discounts in all Swan catering outlets and the Globe gift-shop.

Vacancy – Three BIMI Internships: deadline 2nd Sept 16

ANNOUNCEMENT: PAID INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH THE BIRKBECK INSTITUTE FOR THE MOVING IMAGE

Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) is a response to the growing interest in film and the moving image across the College. Through public events and academic research initiatives, BIMI addresses a wide variety of contemporary issues, particularly those relevant to its interdisciplinary structure.  Working closely with the Birkbeck Cinema, BIMI programmes public screenings and special seasons, making use of 35 mm film in addition to the Cinema’s high quality DVD projection. We run a busy calendar of events from research seminars to film screenings.

We wish to appoint three interns for next the academic year to work closely with BIMI academic staff and the BIMI administrator. In particular, the intern would be involved in:

  • The organisation, promotion and hosting of academic and cultural events, symposia, workshops, screenings and master classes, including the annual BIMI/University of Pittsburgh Lecture and all other collaborative events.
  • To assist with the organisation and promotion of the Birkbeck Essay Film Festival
  • To coordinate documentation and recording of events, audience surveys and follow up, social media practices and development, to participate in and contribute to BIMI Steering Group meetings and liaise across the Schools and College on behalf of BIMI.
  • To assist with the organisation and promotion of the third annual Birkbeck Essay Film Festival

We welcome applications from current Birkbeck students with a variety of interests and expertise but ask that applicants are able to demonstrate a passion for the moving image and screen culture.

There are three positions available split across the three terms. For the winter 2016 and summer 2017 terms the successful candidate will work 40 hours per term, or one day a week. In the spring the role requires 80 hours per term, or two days a week. The exact working days can be discussed but we require our intern to work on the night of each event which tends to fall on a Friday or Saturday. Please note that a typical shift will last 4 hours. Please note that the successful candidate will be paid £16.51 per hour.

London Renaissance Seminar: Internship 16-17 deadline 5 August 2016

London Renaissance Seminar: Research Internships

The London Renaissance Seminar invites postgraduate students at Birkbeck to apply for two research internships 2016-17. These internships are open to all postgraduate students at Birkbeck.

The London Renaissance Seminar hosts and organises a variety of events from half-day symposia to lectures, larger conferences and single lectures. Most events are open to audiences. Anyone with an interest in the Renaissance is welcome to attend. Seminars are usually held in the School of Arts, 43 Gordon Square.

The internship is open to all postgraduate students at Birkbeck and is likely to be particularly rewarding for those working in a historical or literary field in the early modern period. The postholders will (a) have a shared budget of £325 to fund a research-led event of their choice for the LRS, and (b) to participate in steering and above all maintaining the Seminar during the academic year 2016-17. Thus interns will liaise with event organisers at Birkbeck and beyond, work with members of the Steering Committee, ensure the website is up to date, advertise the seminar, liaise with projects (such as the Marston project)

The internships are planned to commence in October 2016 and end in July 2017 (there may be some flexibility). The successful candidates will be working on a postgraduate degree, have some prior research experience and be familiar with early modern texts and ideas.

The research intern’s responsibilities include:

  • Devising, planning, scheduling, advertising and delivering an LRS event using the assigned budget: either one event co-organised or two smaller events. Event to be held in 2016-17. This may include planning of the LRS strand for the Renaissance Society of America conference 2018.
  • Advertising upcoming LRS and Shakespeare Conversations events: website, social Media.
  • Liaison with event organisers and academics involved in planning and delivering events;  liaison with the LRS Fellows and Early Career Fellows 2016-17.
  • Supporting LRS involvement with projects and institutions eg Marston Project; ‘Renaissance Loves’; RSA and Birkbeck projects including Early Modern Reading Group.
  • Contributing to LRS Steering Committee planning meetings

Each intern will provide two hours per week for 3 x 11 week terms, paid at £18.93 per hour.

£325 towards speakers and refreshments for the research event/events to be designed by the two interns

Paid Opportunity: ArtLess Curatorial Internship – Deadline Friday 13th May 2016

The School of Arts invites applications for a curatorial internship to work with the ArtLess Project in collaboration with the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies and Bury Museum of Art (Manchester) during the Summer Term 2016.

The ArtLess Group was established in 2014 to develop creative, entrepreneurial and project possibilities for PhD students across the Arts, and secured AHRC funding for the Arts of Experiment Project, to translate research into potential exhibitions on the international market. Working with partners at Bury Museum of Art (Manchester), students gained skills and experience in curatorial practice and international touring exhibition development. Among the outcomes was a programme of events on the ‘Arts of Experiment’, and a virtual exhibition on Angels and Avatars, which is being curated by Grace Halden and Daniel O’Donnell Smith.

This internship will develop a strand of the ArtLess project, working in close collaboration with partners and the ArtLess group on an international touring exhibition project about fairies in nineteenth-century art.

We are looking for PhD students with an interest in curatorial practice and research specialism in nineteenth-century studies is an advantage.

The intern will be involved in:

  • Translation of research into curatorial practice
  • Development of an exhibition proposal
  • Networking and Liaising between the School of Arts, museums, and other non-HE partners
  • Pitching of an international touring exhibition
  • Organization and marketing in the curatorial sector
  • Public engagement

Remuneration: £15.26 per hour for a maximum of 110 hours to be completed by end July 2016.

Peltz Internship

Birkbeck’s Peltz Gallery, hosted at the School of Arts, is a flexible exhibition space for digital and material displays, small-scale performances, lectures and meetings. The space allows a constellation of research and creative activities to happen at the heart of the building.  Over the two years since it was opened, the Peltz has hosted a wide range of exhibitions based on the research interests and public engagement activities of academics and other staff at Birkbeck. Over the coming year, the range of exhibitions, and associated public events, is due to expand with plans for an artist-in-residence scheme. This provides a valuable opportunity for Birkbeck MPhil/PhD students to gain valuable experience in curating and event management processes.

We are delighted to offer MPhil/PhD students at Birkbeck the opportunity to develop their experience of working in a gallery.  We wish to appoint one intern per academic term during this academic year to work closely with the Peltz Director Annie Coombes, Dr Wendy Earle (Impact development officer), Peltz committee members as appropriate, and the Gallery Administrator and Media Technician. In particular, the interns would be involved in:

  • Supporting the curation and organisation of exhibitions at the Peltz
  • The organisation, promotion and hosting of academic and cultural events, symposia, workshops, screenings and master classes, including the artist-in-residence scheme.
  • To coordinate documentation and recording of events, audience surveys and follow up, social media practices and development, to participate in and contribute to Peltz Committee meetings and liaise across the Schools and College on behalf of the Gallery.

We need to recruit an intern for next term. The position involves a total 40 hours work paid at £15.55/hr.

The essential components of this role are:

  • Event co-ordination and promotion to target audiences (using online resources and social media)
  • Help with promotion, installation and deinstalling exhibitions in the Peltz
  • Manage design and print of event publications
  • Promotion of exhibition through social and other media
  • Monitor numbers and feedback
  • Draft evaluation report

Please note that the job requires hands on assistance and willingness to troubleshoot
