Invitation to group crits for writing-led practices.
‘I am looking to establish a small group of practitioners with similar specific or thematic concerns to present work for critical feedback. In addition to Birkbeck research students, I am also inviting practice-based research students in the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, too.
We would conduct crit-like sessions, with a small number of people presenting work for feedback from the group. Over a number of sessions everyone would have a chance to present. The idea is to generate a community that can offer specific technical advice, as well as more general feedback.
The focus of the group is writing – specifically the production of text for the gallery or other curated spaces. This could be text to be read, performed, listened to or watched onscreen. We would book rooms at Birkbeck for optimum viewing conditions: the cinema, the performance space, the gallery or academic seminar rooms.

Keeping the Memory of the Holocaust Alive: Possibilities and Limitations of Performative Practices of Commemoration, 25 October 2016

Increasingly, museum curators and artists in various geographical contexts tell stories about the past using elements borrowed from theatre, digital media, religious ritual and performance art. In these diverse mise-en-scenes, members of the public take on not only the role of learners, but also of agents of commemoration – responsible for keeping the past in living memory, and for standing up to intolerance and injustice in their societies. This paper asks: What are the reasons for the rise in performative practices of commemoration? What might these practices inform us about the functions assigned to Holocaust remembrance in today’s societies? This paper will reflect critically on the impact which experiential forms of engaging with this history have upon contemporary audiences, and on the broader challenges of communicating about the Holocaust without it becoming a moral lesson, or a cultural commodity.

The ArtLess Group was established in 2014 to develop creative, entrepreneurial and project possibilities for PhD students across the Arts, and secured AHRC funding for the Arts of Experiment Project, to translate research into potential exhibitions on the international market. Working with partners at Bury Museum of Art (Manchester), students gained skills and experience in curatorial practice and international touring exhibition development. Among the outcomes was a programme of events on the ‘Arts of Experiment’, and a virtual exhibition on Angels and Avatars, which is being curated by Grace Halden and Daniel O’Donnell Smith.

This internship will develop a strand of the ArtLess project, working in close collaboration with partners and the ArtLess group on an international touring exhibition project about fairies in nineteenth-century art.
We are looking for PhD students with an interest in curatorial practice and research specialism in nineteenth-century studies is an advantage.
The intern will be involved in:
Remuneration: £15.26 per hour for a maximum of 110 hours to be completed by end July 2016.
