International students tour London’s legal landmarks

Birkbeck’s international students took a well-earned break from their studies to tour the iconic sites of London’s legal history.

On 16 March, Birkbeck’s international students braved a wet and windy Wednesday to explore the legal heart of London.

From The Old Bailey, to the chapels and squares of Lincolns Inn, this walking tour gave our students an insight into London’s most iconic legal landmarks.

Beginning at St. Paul’s, this tour showcased archetypal London architecture, with stories of pubs, writers and barristers along the way.

Valeria Giannoli, an Italian MSc Management student, said: “The walking tour is a fantastic way to socialise and learn something new at the same time. We had a lot of fun while walking around the historic legal buildings of London. Tim Kidd explained to us the past and the present history of the most important courts in London (e.g. Central Criminal Court, Wine Office Court, Central London County Court) and the role of the most notable people in the legal framework of the UK. Will, responsible to plan this event, is extremely kind and helpful should you have any questions or concerns (he won’t let you get lost in the city while you are looking for the meeting point 😉). That one was my first walking tour and I am so glad that I dedicated a little bit of my time to learning something more about this gorgeous city as well as meeting some beautiful people from our University! I hope more people will be able to join this events, you don’t want to miss these out!”

Yasaman Samadian, an Iranian BSc Data Science and Computing student, said: “This walking tour with Mr Tim Kidd was a brilliant experience to learn about legal history of London, to have a different point of view about old mysterious buildings and to consider the meaning and philosophy behind those valuable status and signs. I would love to participate in any upcoming events like that in the future, as it’s a nice adventure between busy hours of study and work”.

We would like to thank the very knowledgeable Tim Kidd for leading this tour.

Birkbeck students embark on virtual tour of the City of London

While we’ve been unable to head out and explore our capital city in person, Birkbeck students toured the historic City of London virtually with the help of guide Tim Kidd.

Whilst we would all love to be together in person, Birkbeck is bringing London to its international student community.

On Thursday 26 June, Birkbeck students were treated to a fascinating virtual tour through the historic City of London.

Courtesy of Tim Kidd, a member of the British Guild of Tour Guides, the Birkbeck community was brought together to explore London’s ancient origins. As Tim explained throughout the event, the City of London has a vibrant and varied history which tells the story of our famous capital. From the Bank of England to the walls of the Tour, Tim was able to explain London’s Roman roots and their role in shaping the world of finance today.

For many of Birkbeck’s students, the City offers world-class employment prospects and a foothold into the world of banking, trading and insurance. The City of London is today regarded as one of the major financial capitals of the world, and with good reason. Tim’s tour told the tale of the City of London, exploring why it is so such a unique place within the UK and Europe. At the end of the tour, an insightful Q&A session followed.

With the international situation evolving rapidly, it’s as important as ever that Birkbeck continues to adapt its student experience. Indeed, we very much look forward to hosting more engaging virtual tours in the future.

Birkbeck School of Business International London Bus Tour

New international students to the School of Business, Economics and Informatics (BEI) were treated to a tour of London on a 1950s red Routemaster bus.

On Tuesday 8 October, thirty of Birkbeck’s new international students embarked on a whirlwind tour of London on this year’s BEI Bus Tour.

From St. Paul’s Cathedral to the glitz of Piccadilly, newly enrolled students were treated to a comprehensive tour of London’s key sights and streets. What’s more, with a classic 1950s red Routemaster, this was a tour completed in the most quintessentially British way.

After a quick stop off outside City Hall, students were given a walking tour of the eastern Southbank – besides HMS Belfast – before looping into the beating heart of Britain’s financial district. A quick photo opportunity outside St. Paul’s Cathedral doubled as the perfect rest stop before the tour headed towards the West End and Victoria.

Hyde Park Corner saw the students on their home straight before this year’s tour passed along Shaftesbury Avenue and back into Bloomsbury.

Luckily this year the weather was on Birkbeck’s side, for most of the tour anyway…

Here are some shots from an action-packed afternoon of sightseeing.
