British and Commonwealth Applicants

The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation – British and Commonwealth Committee – announces its 2018-2019 programme of grants for study based on travel to and research in Venice and the Veneto and other territories of the former Venetian Republic.

Grants will be awarded for historical research on Venice and its empire, and for the study of contemporary Venetian society and culture. Applicants from all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences are eligible for areas of study including, but not limited to: anthropology; archaeology; architecture; art; bibliography; economics; history; history of science; law; literature; music; political thought; religion; theatre; film and television. Applications for research on the environment and conservation are welcomed. Other relevant research interests will be considered.

The application deadline for the British and Commonwealth Programme is 1st May 2018.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be citizens or permanent residents of Great Britain or the Commonwealth, and/or be enrolled for research at a British or Commonwealth university, and/or be permanent or affiliated members of a British or Commonwealth university. Experienced curatorial or conservation staff at British or Commonwealth galleries and museums are also welcome to apply.
  • Have experience of research at graduate level or equivalent. If a doctoral student, to have fulfilled all doctoral requirements before completion of the thesis.

Grants for the maximum amount – normally £5000.00 – are rarely awarded. Funding is granted primarily for transportation and accommodation, but additional research expenses may also be considered. Scholars who have already received and accepted a Delmas grant are eligible to apply for grants, normally for one month, to continue the work related to the previous grant, focused on Venetian material in libraries, archives, museums or galleries outside Venice. Applicants must not submit for funding for both grants within the same year.

Applicants must notify the Committee immediately upon receipt of any other grant for research in the same area.

Any person who has accepted three or more Delmas grants for Venetian research (regardless of amount or timing) will be ineligible for consideration for two programme years after the previous grant. Thereafter, the two-year hiatus continues to apply after each grant.

All successful applicants must submit a report to the Chairman within three months of completing their funded period of research. Failure to do so will render applicants ineligible for future Delmas funding.

Bursary: Women’s Studies Group 1558-1837 – Application Deadline 30 November 17

Last year, the Women’s Studies Group 1558-1837 offered its first ever bursary to an early career researcher, independent scholar or PhD student who was a member of the Group to “support research in any aspect of women’s studies in the period 1558-1837”.  

The bursary was very popular, and so this year they are pleased to be able to offer it again, but this time to make two awards, the first of £500 and the second of £250.  

The money will be paid on presentation of receipts and the winners will be expected to give a paper at a WSG seminar the following year, or, if based abroad, write a report for the WSG website.

The grant may be awarded for a new or continuing interdisciplinary or single-discipline project.  The deadline for applications is November 30th 2017.  Applicants will be notified of the outcome by January 2018.

The Le Guin Feminist Science Fiction Research Fellowship supports travel for the purpose of conducting research using the papers of feminist science fiction authors housed in the UO Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives. Venice Art Biennale 2017: Steward-Research Fellowships

29 October – 26 November 2017  

The School of Arts at Birkbeck is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity to all its students. We are inviting applications for two Steward-Research Fellowships at the Venice Art Biennale 2017, running from 29 October until 26 November. These are part funded by the British Council, and by the School of Arts. The successful candidates will be responsible for making their own travel, accommodation and insurance arrangements, but will be given a grant of £1600 for the month towards these and other expenses.

We are inviting applications from all current students in the School of Arts, from Certificate level through to PhD, and from across the Departments of English and Humanities, History of Art, Cultures and Languages, and Film, Media and Cultural Studies.

However, applicants must be able to state on their application form that they would NOT have to miss any taught components of their programme of study, by taking up a Fellowship from late October through to late November 2017. This does mean that the majority of students on undergraduate and taught postgraduate degrees will be ineligible. We envisage this opportunity being most suitable for MPhil/PhD students as a result. However, we do anticipate continuing this relationship with the British Council in future years, and hope to make future tours available in the vacation periods, and summer term.

The successful candidates will work four days per week as an invigilator in the British Pavilion. Their remaining time will be used for study and research around the biennale theme, Viva Arte Viva. Students may wish to use this opportunity to contribute to an existing project or a dissertation – but there is no obligation to do so.

MHRA Conference Grant Fund – Applications Invited

In 2016, the Modern Humanities Research Association intends to make up to ten grants of up to £1,500 each to support conferences or colloquia within the field of medieval and modern European languages and literatures (including English) held in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland and organised by academics based at UK or Irish institutions.

There will be two application rounds in the calendar year 2016, with up to five grants awarded in each round; the schedules are set out below. The awards will not be made to individuals to attend conferences, but to the organizers of conferences to provide assistance with organizational support and/or the travel and subsistence costs of certain participants, including postgraduate students.

Deadlines and Timescales

Round A

For conferences taking place between: 1st August 2016 and 31st January 2017. Application deadline: 31st January 2016. Decisions expected by: mid-March 2016.

Round B

For conferences taking place between: 1st February 2017 and 31st July 2017. Application deadline: 30th June 2016. Decisions expected by: mid-August 2016.

Applications can only be considered in the correct round, based on the planned date of the conference.

Free student membership and launch of the PBS National Student Poetry Competition

The PBS has just launched this year’s free student membership. You’ll be able to log in and browse the online quarterly Bulletin available in the members’ area of the new site, and order books with your 25% members’ discount.

On 5 November we’re also launching this year’s PBS National Student Poetry Competition, the only nationwide competition of its kind, and will email student members with all the details then. There will be a First Prize of £200, with a second prize of £50 and third prize of £25. All three will receive Full PBS memberships. Eight highly commended poems will receive Associate membership of the PBS and a selection of books. The 20 best poems will be published in a free ebook available to download from our website and we hope to arrange a reading at the winner’s university.

The PBS will keep you up-to-date with the Bulletin, our review of the latest new poetry, with the best new collections chosen by our Selectors, John Burnside and Deryn Rees-Jones, and the poets’ own comments on their work.
