Please save the date for the second annual Migrating Texts event, which will bring together academics, practitioners and cultural industry professionals to discuss subtitling, translation and intermedial adaptation. You are welcome to attend one, two or all three sessions. Migrating Texts is aimed at helping postgraduate students and early career researchers use their language and creative skills beyond their studies, whether that be for a future career outside of academia, or for developing public engagement projects and creating ‘impact’.

09:30 Arrive and registration
10:00-12:00 Session 1: Training on media accessibility
We will begin by exploring questions of media accessibility by making specific reference to informed filmmaking practices, UK standards and regulations with regard to media content, and new technologies available in subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) and in live subtitling.

This session will include screenings of short documentaries by Pablo and Charlie.
12:00-13:00 Lunch break
13:00-15:00 Session 2: Overcoming linguistic and cultural boundaries
In this session we will consider how translation and adaptation of works from other countries can be used to promote an active interest in foreign languages and cultures. Educators and students will discuss practical methods for increasing access to and exploration of different cultural texts both in schools and in communities.

15:00-15:30 Coffee break
15:30-17:30 Session 3: Understanding intercultural dynamics
The final session will explore how migrated texts (translations, adaptations or subtitled films) can be a way of understanding intercultural dynamics. We will reflect on the psychological processes involved in creating and consuming translations between cultures, highlighting social beliefs, politics, and minority interests.
